Five arrested over video of burning Grenfell effigy on bonfire

A video posted online showed a large cardboard model marked "Grenfell Tower" being placed over a fire in what appeared to be a back garden where there was an English flag on a pole. The men, who range in age from 19 to 55, remained in custody Tuesday but had not been charged.

A "stomach-churning" video has emerged of a group of people setting a cardboard mock-up of Grenfell Tower on fire.

One person joked "the little ninja is getting it at the moment, ' to which one person replied 'it's because they don't pay their rent".

"I am very pleased to hear that the authorities are taking the matter very seriously and that an investigation is under way".

"To mock that disaster in such a crude way is vile", Mr Cundy said.

Other comments include that of a man shouting "jump out the window" and another boasting that he "made the burning people".

London Fire Commissioner Dany Cotton described the footage as "appalling and disturbing", adding it "cannot be justified on any level".

Communities Secretary James Brokenshire said: "At a time when the bereaved and survivors are giving testimony to the Grenfell inquiry and reliving the unimaginable horror of that tragedy, it beggars belief that anyone should do this".

"It can not be justified on any level".

The video also drew allegations that it was racist because numerous Grenfell Tower victims were people of immigrant backgrounds and Muslim.

The video ends as the model is completely consumed by the fire, with one bystander saying: "Perfect".

"Not only is it extremely upsetting to survivors and people who lost family, it's hateful and offensive to everyone that has been affected by the tragic events of that night", she said.

"This was an unnecessary sickening act of hate against those who, through no fault of their own, have experienced the worst since 14 June 2017".

London Mayor Sadiq Khan called the video "sickening" and urged social media companies to remove the content.

Campaign group Justice 4 Grenfell also condemned the video, stating that it is clearly a "hate crime".
