Florida election results: Governor and Senate races close after big turnout

Andrew Gillum, Democratic nominee for governor of Florida, conceded to Republican Ron DeSantis shortly before 11 p.m. on election night.

The win maintained the grip Republicans have had on the governor's office since Jeb Bush was sworn in in 1999, and DeSantis will have a chance to return the favor for Trump in 2020, when Florida figures to play a pivotal role in the presidential election.

Gilllum said he called DeSantis and congratulated him.

Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum and his wife R. Jai voted Tuesday morning at a church in the northside of the city.

Accusations of race-baiting dogged Kemp, 55, and DeSantis, 40, who denied the allegations.

Pinder's mother Phillis, who accompanied the Liberty City resident and his young son to the polls, added, "We have a president who doesn't get his information correct - he says things that just are not true - and he speaks so cruelly".

Florida's more than 13 million registered voters are choosing a new governor and voting on a pivotal U.S. Senate contest. Gillum called himself "the most unapologetically progressive" candidate in the five-candidate Democratic field and staked out some positions beyond the reach of state government, such as his call for Trump's impeachment or his endorsement of Sanders' "Medicare for all" plan.

"The true story of this race is intense gratitude to President Trump".

An NBC News/Marist poll released Monday has Gillum with a 4-point lead over DeSantis. "We can still pull this off", radio personality Tom Joyner told a crowd of students and supporters, many of whom were clad in blue T-shirts emblazoned with Gillum's name.

In Colorado, Democrat Jared Polis was set to become the first openly gay man to be elected governor of a USA state, after NBC News projected him to win against Republican Walker Stapleton.

It was Trump's support, including a July endorsement rally in Tampa, that helped propel DeSantis past a better-funded and more widely known opponent, Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, in the August 28 Republican primary. Trump visited Florida and held a rally with DeSantis on October 31.

"I believe you have to turn a page on a campaign", DeSantis said, shortly before red and white confetti exploded at his election party. He said health care is a priority for him because of a pre-existing medical condition.
