'Gladiator 2' is in the works -- but who's going to lead it?

According to Deadline, since Russell Crowe's Maximus didn't make it out alive at the end of Gladiator, the sequel will instead focus on the character Lucius. This new script will be penned Peter Craig, screenwriter of Ben Affleck's brilliant Oscar-nominated The Town as well as two Hunger Games movies and 12 Strong.

Ridley Scott wants to return to ancient Rome with a Gladiator sequel.

The first film ended with Maximus successfully killing Commodus, though also being mortally wounded during their fight and dying, joining his family in the afterlife and saving Commodus' sister and son from her demented brother. As per the report, Paramount will be developing the project and Universal has the option to co-produce the film. So long, in fact, that we interviewed him about the subject back in 2003. Nick Cave was subsequently brought on board to write a script which would have seen Maximus reincarnated as an immortal who defends early Christians from the Romans before being transported through other periods in history including World War II and Vietnam before ending up as a general in the modern-day Pentagon.

2000's Gladiator was a huge hit. "He's doing something right now but I'm trying to get him back down here". The original was released in 2000 to a very warm reception winning 5 oscars (including best picture and best actor) and raking in millions at the box office, 460 of them to be specific.

If you'll recall, Lucius was the nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), and watched on as his uncle was killed by Maximus in the gladiator arena.
