Google Chrome 71 will continue crackdown on sites with abusive ads

As an expansion of Google's efforts, Chrome 71 will block ads on sites that show intrusive or misleading ads. Google has confirmed that it will begin blocking all ads on sites that list abusive ads from December this year.

When Google releases Google Chrome 71 later this year the browser will block the ads on sites that it determines provide an "abusive" user experience.

Chrome to block all ads on sites that gives abusive experiences.

Site owners can use the Abusive Experiences Report in their Google Search Console to see if their site contains any of these abusive experiences which need to be corrected or removed.

It's the latest in Google's ongoing attempt to make web browsing through Chrome a safer experience - since January 2018, Chrome has been forcing redirect pop-ups into the browser's info bar, giving users a chance to decide whether they truly want to head off to different content.

While Chrome users are able to disable this blocking technology, it will be switched on by default, so sites that fail to clean up their act could be faced with drastic losses in revenue if they don't address the poor ad experience that they offer.

Google has already taken steps to combat abusive and misleading ads.

Users who wish to continue to see ads on abusive sites can disable this feature by going into Settings and searching for "Ads " or by going to Settings - Advanced - Content - Ads.

In fact, the new browser will remove all ads from sites that feature these types of ads, the company said in a blog post. This week, the company said that roughly half of these unwanted experiences include these abusive ads, justifying the crackdown. While some of them may be useful, targeted ads at large, are considered an intrusion to user privacy.

Unexpected Click Areas: Transparent backgrounds, non-visible page elements, or other typically non-clickable areas that lead to an ad or landing page when clicked.

The criteria is spotting sites that try to show fake error messages (like the ones telling you that you have a virus), sites that redirect you without so much as a by-your-leave as well as anything that seems phishy or social engineer-y.
