Grassley to leave Judiciary Committee chair

Grassley has two more years under Senate GOP rules to be Finance chairman, where he'll also have jurisdiction over trade and health care policy.

Republican Sen. Charles E. Grassley announced he would take over the gavel of the tax-writing Finance Committee in the 116th Congress, a position he held in the early part of 2001 and again from 2003 through 2006.

"I have informed the Majority Leader that I will not vote to advance any of the 21 judicial nominees pending in the Judiciary Committee, or vote to confirm the 32 judges awaiting a confirmation vote on the floor", Flake said Wednesday, "until S. 2644 is brought to the full Senate for a vote".

Graham, of course, became a national villain, or hero, depending on your outlook, for his decidedly non-judicious demeanor during the committee's final hearings on Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court nomination, serving up a wildly partisan tirade aimed, some thought, at shoring up his conservative and Trumpian street cred back home and in Washington.

"He chaired the committee with a steady hand, sense of fundamental fairness, and resolve", Graham said. His work, along with his Democrat and Republican colleagues, accomplished so much for the American people. That opens the way for the next-highest-ranking Republican on Judiciary, South Carolina's Lindsey Graham, to take over that committee.

"The oversight function will be very much front and center", Graham said in an appearance on CNN.

When Fox News host Sean Hannity asked him this week what his number one priority will be if he becomes chairman, Graham said, "Judges, judges, and more judges". Graham contended that Trump legally appointed Whitaker to serve as acting AG. "I look forward to working with other senators, both Republican and Democratic, to get the job done".
