Harvard Running Back’s Gesture Costs Crimson Touchdown Versus Yale

The touchdown would have given Harvard a 34-27 lead early in the fourth quarter. The school announced after the game that it was a right hip injury and Stewart was expected to make a full recovery.

"The bottom line is: He was wrong", Murphy said. "It's heartbreaking for that to happen that late in the game, that late in his career".

"Tom wasn't supposed to play", said Murphy. He didn't throw a pass all week. "I watched it several times on replay".

Rivalries games are rough, especially in the Ivy Leagues.

Now that's something you don't see every day. Harvard's Stewart was stripped of the ball by Yale's Spencer Matthei and Mikah Awodiran recovered. The score capped a nine-play, 86-yard drive that began after the first of two interceptions by Harvard captain Zach Miller. The two teams combine for the most points (72) in the rivalry's history, and Harvard put up the most points (45) and total yards (578) it ever has in a game against Yale.

Yale (5-5, 3-4) answered on the ensuing possession when Alan Lamar scored on a 3-yard run with 2:39 remaining in the first quarter.

Yale (5-5, 3-4) had beaten Harvard in back-to-back years, but the Crimson have now won 15 of the last 18 matchups. The Bulldogs' O'Connor (7 for 127) hit JP Shohfi on a 16-yard crossing pattern for a touchdown to pull Yale even.

The second half was quick to provide drama.

O'Connor completed 23 of 48 passes for 328 yards. The result of the play was a first down for Yale. I just can't believe that was anything other than a form tackle.

Yale cut the deficit on a 25-yard field goal to 1 but that ended their scoring.

Harvard got a touchdown called back after sophomore running back Devin Darrington taunted Yale defensive back Rodney Thomas II with what was presumed to be the middle finger as he ran into the end zone.

The penalty negated Darrington's touchdown, and Harvard was forced to settle for a field goal in Boston.
