Have Liverpool lost their bite in midfield at the moment?

Adam Lallana admits Liverpool's players must take the blame for their Champions League woes after their shock defeat by Red Star Belgrade.

Liverpool went into the game hoping to open up a four-point gap at the summit before Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain faced each other later on Tuesday, but the visitors fell well short of expectations.

"The start was intense, that was clear", Klopp said.

Liverpool have won just three of their last nine matches, against Red Star, Cardiff and Huddersfield.

"Napoli came here and found it tough as well, so it's a tough place to come, but we expected that".

But Red Star were worthy of the victory - the first they have claimed in the Champions League for 26 years - in front of a noisy and passionate home crowd in the Rajko Mitic Stadium.

'We need to win our games, it's on our shoulders, we have some good sides to play and it's in our hands but we will have to play better than we did tonight.

Red Star's pass accuracy was just 57 percent, while Liverpool's was 82 percent.

"We had chances but we weren't ruthless enough, weren't patient enough".

Liverpool had a lucky escape at the start of the second period - the referee failing to award Red Star a penalty when a shot struck the arm of James Milner.

Forward Milan Pavkov headed his side into the lead after 21 minutes and fired a powerful effort into the bottom corner to make it 2-0 shortly afterwards.

Klopp regularly conducts analysis with his players the day after a game, having reviewed the match himself at least twice but Wednesday's debrief assumed a more critical air given the nature of defeat and the precariousness of Liverpool's position in the group.

The side was hamstrung by the inability of that threesome to win the ball - they also conspired to lose it on a number of occasions, notably Milner for the second Red Star goal.

They conceded a goal from a corner and another from a loss of possession and quick counter-attack against Red Star.

"They time-wasted and we lost momentum but to come in 2-0 down wasn't like us and we've got to take full responsibility and make sure that doesn't happen again".

"We can perform a lot better than the two [away] games we've had [against Napoli and Red Star], they've been off days and we need to look at that, of course we do".
