Iran summons Danish ambassador over plot allegations

Earlier, Danish police announced the arrest of a Norwegian citizen with an Iranian background in connection with an alleged Iranian Intelligence attack on an individual in Denmark.

Ahead of the sanctions targeting Iran's oil and banking sectors taking effect November 4, Iran has been intensively negotiating with Europeans for a new mechanism to mitigate the impacts of the measures, which have already spread panic over soaring prices among ordinary Iranians.

A Norwegian of Iranian origin was arrested on October 21 for planning the attack and spying for Iran. The Iranian government also denied any connection with the alleged plot.

ASMLA seeks the independence of the oil-producing southwestern and predominantly Arab region of Khuzestan, and the group - classed as a terrorist organization by Iran - has admitted to bombing campaigns.

"We believe that Iranian authorities are behind the failure of the implementation plan of attack", reads the statement of the head of the Danish foreign Minister Anders Samuelsen. "Obviously, we can't and won't accept that", Andersen told a news conference. The ministry's spokesman Bahram Qassemi vehemently denied the Danish allegations as "in line with conspiracies by the known enemies of the good and expanding ties between Iran and Europe" at a juncture he described as "special and critical".

"We want to preserve the nuclear agreement", Lokke Rasmussen said, referring to how possible sanctions would approach the 2015 global accord on Iran's nuclear programme.

"During the meeting, we underlined that the activity that has come to light through the investigation in Denmark, it is unacceptable", Foreign Minister Ine Eriksen Soereide said in a statement.

The EU on Wednesday condemned a foiled "attack" in Denmark blamed on Tehran but insisted the incident should not undermine Europe's support for the beleaguered Iran nuclear deal.

A spokeswoman for the European Commission said that EU countries "stand in solidarity" with Denmark.

Tehran has rejected what it calls "hostile" Danish claims. "U.S. and its regional clients are desperate for any distraction from their moral & political failures", wrote Iranian Ambassador to London Hamid Baeidinjead on Tuesday. The country will react toward Iran and will speak with its European partners about "further steps", he said, without giving details. At the same time, Norwegian police confirmed they were assisting Danish law enforcement on the issue.

The report details how in multiple locations around the globe, from Austria to Albania to Iraq, Iran has turned its embassies into "terrorism planning sites" to meddle in the affairs of host governments and hunt down the opposition, according to the report by the National Council of Resistance of Iran.
