Maurizio Sarri admits TWO Blues stars are surplus to requirements

Drinkwater hasn't featured since coming off the bench in the Community Shield against Manchester City as his struggles since a £35 million move from Leicester City under Antonio Conte have continued this season.

Maurizio Sarri gave an explanation as to why Victor Moses and Danny Drinkwater are out of favour at Chelsea as his side prepare to face Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday.

Olivier Giroud is set to return after missing the Derby game with a muscle problem while the likes of Kepa, Cesar Azpilicueta, David Luiz, Marcos Alonso and Jorginho are expected to be recalled. It depends on him, I think.

Asked whether appointing Cahill as skipper means he will definitely stay at Chelsea at least until the end of the season, Sarri said: "I don't know". 'It depends on him and the club. It's now 15 games unbeaten since the start of the season, and it's always helpful to maintain momentum in the cup competitions, especially when it keeps squad players fit and interested.

"If you look only in the Premier League the situation is that, you are right [only used 19 players] but I have to look at all competitions: 90 minutes are 90 minutes. At the moment it was done between the Europa League, the League Cup and the Premier League, but maybe in the future it will be different".

"I have to look also to the minutes in the national teams".

'If we want to win something, then we need to be a solid team.

The same is true of seven of Chelsea's 10 matches, indicating that they too tend to do much of their best work when teams tire late on.

"I don't want to think about the record, only to think about the match and to gain points". I can say to the club my opinion about what I think I need but my job is to try to improve my players.

But there are also potentially key differences in the way Sarri has shared out the minutes between his players in comparison to his rivals ahead of matchday 11.
