Niantic Reboots its First Game, Ingress, With a Big Update

Ingress is one of the earliest augmented reality apps, and it was released a few years ago. In the case of Ingress Prime, it was able to experiment more freely when working with its own IP.

Once upon a time, before Pokémon Go took over the world, there was a mobile game known as Ingress which revolved around using the Global Positioning System within players' phones to discover in-game elements within real-life locations. It is now launched on iOS and Android, and it can be downloaded for free.

As with the original, the Ingress Prime storyline will evolve and change based on how Ingress Agents interact with one another and the outcome of Ingress real world "Anomaly" events. The technology pioneered by Niantic in Ingress was then used as the foundation for Pokemon Go.

Earlier today, Niantic sent out a press release announcing the release of Ingress Prime, a sequel to their popular Ingress mobile game. It only means that all of your progress is safe.

Ingress Prime is available now in Apple App Store and Google Play Store. It's the flawless time to get back into the game if you've fallen out of it.

Upon completing the training, players must choose a side between The Enlightened and The Resistance, two factions battling for control of these landmarks and the fate of the world.

The Ingress subreddit has been flooded with negative responses to the update (via Android Police), with many bemoaning a perceived pivot towards "pay-to-win" style mechanics and a host of bugs. It streamlines the whole experience and reboots the story so that it makes a lot more sense.

As well as the game, the Ingress Prime story will also be told through a web series called The Dunraven Project, as well as an anime series that will come to Netflix in 2019.
