No Le'Veon Bell, no problem for James Conner and the Steelers

No Le'Veon Bell, no problem for James Conner and the Steelers

Le'Veon Bell's season and days with the Steelers appear to be over.

Steelers owner Art Rooney had said Thursday he expected Bell to report, while earlier this week, head coach Mike Tomlin had curtly addressed the matter by saying, "We need volunteers, not hostages".

The Le'Veon Bell saga in Pittsburgh has no signs of ending.

The upgrade to quarterback money nearly guarantees that the Steelers will not tag Bell and will either let him walk as an unrestricted free agent or transition tag him, which is another mess of a situation.

Bell's holdout, and poor communication about when he might report to the Steelers, has worn thin with players and officials in the organization.

If Bell sits out the entire season, sources said the National Football League would argue that he must be transitioned at 120 percent of his last National Football League salary, which in this case would go back to the 2017 season that he played out on the franchise tag, worth $12.12M.

By showing up on Tuesday, Bell would make up to $6 million in base salary.

The three-time Pro-Bowl selection has been sitting out this season after failing to come to an agreement on a long-term contract with the Steelers this past offseason. The Steelers had offered Bell a five-year, $70 million deal, with more than $30 million guaranteed that he turned down.

If Bell does not show up on Tuesday, he'll have left over $14 million on the table and likely brought about the end of his career in Pittsburgh although the Steelers will be able to use the franchise tag on him for a third time and match any offers he receives.
