Plastic waste elimination pledge by 2025 attracts more big firms

Plastic waste elimination pledge by 2025 attracts more big firms

Business giants, financial investors, non-profit organisations and national Governments have vowed to eradicate plastic waste and pollution, as part of a new Global Commitment spearheaded by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.

The New Plastics Economy Global Commitment has been created to unite businesses, governments, and other organizations behind a common vision. Others range from the WWF to Nestle and Coca-Cola Femsa, with the total list of signatories representing 20 per cent of all packaging produced globally.

Dame Ellen said: 'We know cleaning up plastics from beaches and oceans is vital, but this does not stop the tide of plastic entering the oceans each year.

"Ocean plastic is one of the most visible and disturbing examples of a plastic pollution crisis", Erik Solheim, Executive Director of UN Environment, said in the statement from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.

A recent Greenpeace survey revealed that 11 of the world's largest fast-moving consumer goods companies have plans that allow them to increase production of single-use plastics while none have set clear elimination or reduction targets. The targets will be reviewed every 18 months to ensure they are being met.

Signatories to the commitment will publish annual data on their progress to help spur momentum and ensure transparency.

UNEP has estimated that if current pollution rates continue, there will be more plastic in the sea than fish by 2050, as 8 million tonnes of bottles and waste enter the oceans each year.

According to a company news release, Danone plans to ensure that all its packaging is created to be 100 percent recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025. But plastic should never become a waste product, it should retain its economic value.

The campaign is led by Ellen MacArthur Foundation, a charity launched by the yachts woman and the United Nations. It began as an investigation into how much recycled plastic is actually recycled.

As part of a sustainable economy, products and packaging need to be created to be taken apart when they are no longer useful, and the materials either made into something new or returned to nature through composting.

"I am proud that today we have signed up to the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment", UK Secretary of State for the Environment Michael Gove said.

Echoing his sentiment, Ian Cook, chairman and CEO of Colgate-Palmolive, and CGF Board co-chair, added that the challenge of plastic waste can be "best addressed through specific actions that CGF companies can take individually and collectively in partnership with governments, NGOs and the recycling industry".
