Protests Called Against Trump’s Acting Attorney General

He managed a Senate campaign for Sam Clovis in Iowa, who later was nominated to join the Trump administration, ran Iowa for Trump, and was interviewed by Mueller's investigators.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump's legal team has begun working with the president to craft responses to questions from Mueller's team as part of their investigation, sources close to Trump told ABC.

The Justice Department did not directly answer whether Whitaker would assume control of Mueller's investigation, with spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores saying he would be "in charge of all matters under the purview of the Department of Justice".

Democratic Representative Jerrold Nadler, who is in line to become chairman of the House Judiciary Committee in January, said it is "wholly inappropriate" for Whitaker to take over the Mueller probe and that Rosenstein should continue overseeing it.

That duty has belonged to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who appointed Mueller and closely monitors his work.

Trump announced in a tweet that Sessions' chief of staff, Matthew Whitaker, will become the new acting attorney general.

Florida attorney general Pam Bondi, who has appeared with Trump at campaign events, has also been floated.

The departure was the culmination of a toxic relationship that frayed just weeks into Sessions' tenure, when he stepped aside from the Russia investigation because of his campaign advocacy and following the revelation that he had met twice in 2016 with the Russian ambassador to the U.S. "No one is above the law", said Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee. They also want Congress to take steps to protect the special counsel's office.

The Washington Post reported that Whitaker has no intention of recusing himself, following howls from Democrats about his past statements on the special counsel.

Can Whitaker be forced to recuse himself? Protest organizers-a coalition that includes MoveOn, Rise and Resist, and PEN America-will demand that the House Judiciary Committee immediately begin hearings into the president for obstruction, and that the Senate establish a "Watergate-type Select Committee" to investigate Trump's ties with Russian Federation.

Trump's running commentary criticizing Sessions and the Justice Department injected more turmoil into an agency that was still reeling from the president's firing of FBI Director James Comey in May 2017.

In addition to Sessions' ouster, Democrats are also interested in looking into Mr. Trump's tax returns, and worldwide business dealings.

Donald Trump emerged from midterm elections promising cooperation only to plunge Washington into turmoil Thursday over suspicions that he's trying to kill the Russian Federation collusion probe and an extraordinary intensification of his war with journalists.

He bolstered the agenda of Trump's evangelical supporters with new rules letting employers opt out of providing health insurance that covers birth control and paving the way for religious businesses and employees to discriminate based on their closely held beliefs.
