Qld man jailed for aiding wife's death

While people have been convicted before of helping someone to suicide, usually in mercy killings, Justice Peter Davis said no one had been convicted in Australia before of persuading someone who would not otherwise have taken his or her own life to suicide.

Morant's true objective was to get his hands on her life insurance payouts, worth $1.4 million.

In the weeks leading up to her death, Mrs Morant expressed fear and doubt to friends but said she felt trapped by promises to give them a share of the money.

Graham Robert Morant, 69, will spend at least five years behind bars.

On Friday, Graham Morant was jailed for convincing his sick wife that suicide was the only option left for her.

The case is believed to be the first such conviction in Australia.

Mrs Morant, who had suffered from chronic back pain, depression and anxiety, was found dead in her auto alongside a petrol generator, with a note saying "please don't resuscitate me".

He ruled that he was motivated by money and wanted to collect 1.4 million Australian dollars (£880,000) from three life insurance policies.

The distinction between euthanasia and assisted suicide was explained by Penney Lewis, Professor of Law at King's College, London, who stated, "Euthanasia is an intervention undertaken with the intention of ending a life to relieve suffering, for example a lethal injection administered by a doctor".

Morant received a maximum 10-year sentence for the charge of counselling suicide, and a six-year sentence for the charge of aiding suicide. Eligible for parole in 2023. For help with depression visit beyondblue or contact 1300 22 4636.

Prosecutors told Morant's trial that he was influenced by greed and wanted to use the funds to build a bunker in the Gold Coast Hinterland.
