Red Bull chief speaks out over Max Verstappen outburst on Esteban Ocon

Red Bull chief speaks out over Max Verstappen outburst on Esteban Ocon

"Maybe what Max did was not good", Jos, who took out Juan Pablo Montoya from the lead of the Brazilian grand prix in 2001, told De Telegraaf newspaper.

The 21-year-old Dutch driver and Force India's Esteban Ocon, 22, provided the main talking point after the youngsters clashed on and off the track at Interlagos.

Ocon, backed by champions Mercedes who see him as a talent for the future, was widely criticised for a risky move in trying to pass the leading vehicle when already lapped.

"For me personally, this season was not what I had hoped for, but I'm really happy to be part of this Constructors' Championship-winning team - it means a lot to me and I'm a very proud team member". He was handed a 10-second stop/go penalty at the time. Verstappen was later ordered to perform two days of public service at the direction of motorsport governing body FIA within six months.

Lewis Hamilton hailed his Mercedes team as legends on Monday and described his championship-clinching victory in Sunday's Brazilian Grand Prix as the best moment in five triumphant seasons.

Who won the 2018 Formula 1 world championship?

'Max is driving really well this year. I tell you, that propels me.

Damon Hill, the 1996 world champion and Sky Sports pundit, felt neither was blameless.

He also pointed out that Verstappen and Ocon have an acrimonious relationship that stretches back to 2010.

"But Max diced with him, instead of going, 'What is this guy playing at?" I know it's been a tough year for everyone here, so thank you all - it's been a privilege and absolutely awesome to drive this auto.

"The job is going to get more hard every year". It won't make a difference anyway, because he will continue to take risks and drive the way he drives, but he will learn.

On a scale of fisticuffs, Sunday's incident ranked among the milder ones.

Verstappen's boss Christian Horner caused a stir with his immediate reaction, claiming that Ocon was "lucky" that Verstappen did not get more physical with him, but the comments did not warrant being looked into. Victory in Brazil ensured they have equalled Ferrari's record, achieved with Michael Schumacher between 2000 and 2004.
