Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic advance to Paris Masters quarterfinals

Federer will play either Kevin Anderson or Kei Nishikori in Friday's final eight.

Federer, who has not competed in Paris at either the French Open or indoor Masters since 2015, received a standing ovation after making a winning comeback in Bercy following his late decision to compete after his 99th triumph in Basel on Sunday.

ATP Paris Masters 2018: Novak Djokovic Enters Quarter Finals; Bids to Win Fifth Paris Title. "The doctor says if I want to play the tournament, I want to try to win the tournament, the abdominal with break for sure".

Nishikori is now ninth in the race to the eight-player ATP Finals in London, but with Rafael Nadal and Juan Martin del Potro both withdrawing from the ongoing Paris Masters event due to injury, their participation in the season finale is in doubt.

Nishikori defeated Anderson 6-4 6-4 to gain revenge for his Erste Bank Open final defeat to the big South African in Vienna. And Djokovic took a swift step onwards after Damir Dzumhur was forced to retire at 6-1, 2-1 down.

Djokovic, a 14-time Grand Slam champion, had slipped down to 22nd in the rankings in May as he dealt with an elbow injury.

"In the next match against Novak it will be another big challenge".

2018 has been another great advertisement for the over-30s of the tennis world, so much so that six of them may be among the elite eight to play at the season finale in London.

. "Of course, I'm very, very happy and proud about it".

Nishikori could still make the London party but John Isner's hopes received a potentially fatal blow when he was beaten 6-4, 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (8-6), by rising Russian Karen Khachanov. Instead, Federer received a walk-over into the third round, where he will face Fabio Fognini on Thursday.

In the quarterfinals, Khachanov will meet Germany's fourth seed Alexander Zverev, who subdued the scurrying defiance of Argentina's Diego Schwartzman 6-4, 6-2.

After two players held their serves in the first two games, Federer registered his first break throughout the match and built a 4-1 lead, seeing his Italian rival throw the racquet onto the court in discontent.

Djokovic, who will reclaim the No. 1 ranking next week regardless of how he does here, faces Marin Cilic in the quarterfinals.

Defending champion Jack Sock did not face a break point and needed less than one hour to beat lucky loser Malek Jaziri 6-0, 6-4.

Djokovic is winning the head-to-head battle with Cilic 15-3, but Cilic has won two of their past three meetings.
