Russian Federation blames rocket failure on mistake during assembly

Last week, Russian Federation successfully launched a Soyuz rocket for the first time since the failure.

Two astronauts made emergency landing in Kazakhstan after failure of Soyuz rocket on October 11.

The crew members, Russian cosmonaut Alexey Ovchinin and American astronaut Nick Hague, were recovered in good health after their escape capsule landed safely near the Kazakh city of Dzhezkazgan, 400km (250 miles) from where the rocket had launched.

Roscosmos executive director Sergei Krikalyov told the RIA Novosti state news agency: "The industry is now making significant efforts to move forward the launch to December 3".

Russian space officials say they hope to resume sending crews to the International Space Station on December 3 after an October launch failed because of a technical malfunction.

The mission crew that is now working aboard the ISS might return to Earth on December 20, Krikalyov said.

Aboard the next manned spacecraft will be Canadian David Saint-Jacques, Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko and NASA astronaut Anne McClain, Agence France-Presse reported.

In the first official report on the cause of the October 11 accident, Roscosmos said a sensor that indicated the separation of the first two stages of the rocket malfunctioned.

"This is the first launch of a rocket from the Soyuz family since the October 11 accident", Russia's space agency chief Dmitry Rogozin wrote on Twitter. The problems with the Soyuz rocket, he said, will be fixed.

The current ISS crew, the ESA's Alexander Gerst, NASA's Serena Aunon-Chancellor, and Roscosmos' Sergey Prokopyev, are expected to return to Earth around December 20, a week after their originally-scheduled December 13 descent.

Because of the sensor failure, a side block of the first rocket stage separated incorrectly, impacting the second-stage fuel tank, which then exploded.

Roscosmos has scheduled a press conference for November 1 to further detail the outcome of its investigation.
