Satanic Temple sues Netflix, Warner Bros over a statue in 'Sabrina'

Satanic Temple sues Netflix, Warner Bros over a statue in 'Sabrina'

They are claiming that the creators of Netflix and Warner Bros. joint effort the "Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" have ripped off their Baphomet statue.

The statue design, called the "TST Baphomet with Children" in the complaint, is called a "unique expression of an idea" that was "misappropriated" by the "highly sophisticated media production and distribution companies" behind Sabrina.

A one-ton, 7-foot (2.13-m) bronze statue of Baphomet - a goat-headed winged deity that has been associated with Satanism and the occult - is displayed by the Satanic Temple during its opening in Salem, Massachusetts, U.S. September 22, 2016.

It is based of the same comic book series which spawned Sabrina The Teenage Witch, starring Melissa Joan Hart and running from 1996-2003.

In a bid to antagonize local governments that allow religious displays on public property - in its view, violating the separation of church and state - TST donated Baphomet to Oklahoma for display next to a Ten Commandments monument, only to see it rerouted to Arkansas' Capitol building amid litigation and protests. The temple argues that the television show not only copied its conception of the deity - a muscled figure with two young children staring up at it - but also that it gives the statue and the Satanic Temple itself a bad rap.

"The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina" is a supernatural show produced by Netflix.

Satanic Temple said it does not worship Satan, but instead seeks "to encourage benevolence and empathy among all people". "A lot of people who haven't heard of us first stand to just recognize that monument as the "Sabrina" monument, which dilutes and denigrates the entire project", Greaves said.

Netflix Inc and Warner Bros Entertainment have declined to comment on the lawsuit.
