Taylor resigns from Cricket Australia board as turmoil continues

The former opener notably played a key role in Steve Smith's appointment as caretaker captain in 2014, when the board blooded Australia's youngest Test captain since Kim Hughes. But what grabbed the limelight was his helicopter shot during the knock that apparently reminds of Indian wicketkeeper MS Dhoni who originates the shot.

Taylor had been spoken about as a potential successor to David Peever, who was forced to quit last week, and said his decision had taken a "high degree of soul searching" but that the last 18 months, going back to the "toxic" MoU negotiations, and particularly the last six months involving the Cape Town ball-tampering had becoming increasingly challenging.

Test captain Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner were banned from worldwide or first-class cricket for 12 months and opening batsman Cameron Bancroft was suspended for nine months after the clumsy plot to change the condition of the ball during the game against South Africa was captured by TV cameras. Calls have been growing for Smith and Warner to return to the worldwide fold after a string of poor performances by the national team.

The Australian Cricketers' Association (ACA) termed the punishment on the trio "harsh" and called for a reconsideration but CA chairman David Peever remained adamant and turned down the plea.

The absence of Taylor will arguably leave a bigger hole for CA to fill than that created by Peever's resignation, especially when it comes to the various on- field matters referenced by The Ethics Centre.

I'm still a broadcaster but I'm also very loosely a reporter, which means I've got to give my opinion much more on things like what's happening within the world of Cricket Australia rather than what is happening within the men's and women's cricket teams.

He becomes the latest top figure to exit the embattled organisation following chief executive James Sutherland and chairman David Peever.

"It's been an honour to have an icon of Australian cricket serving on the board of Cricket Australia, and our best wishes go to Mark", Mr Eddings said in a statement. And I've got to the stage where I don't think I can give any more.

The bad-tempered stand-off rumbled on for months, rattling the game and straining the players' relationship with the governing body.

It is the board's policy to have two former Test cricketers sitting as directors at any one point so there will be a desire to have another ex-player join fellow director Michael Kasprowicz.
