The mangled wreckage of BHP's runaway train which derailed in Western Australia

The miner suspended all of its rail operations on Monday after it derailed the iron ore train, damaging 1.5 kilometres of track and crushing numerous 268 fully-laden wagons in the process.

Damage caused by a runaway iron ore train will hit BHP's sales this quarter, the mining group has admitted, as the first pictures of its mangled wreckage in Western Australia emerged.

It was reported that the train was travelling at an average speed of more than 100 km/h on its solo journey. Nobody was injured in the incident, which happened in a remote area.

ATSB posted a few details of the incident, noting that the train consisted of four locomotives and 268 railcars.

BHP's shares were trading 1.21 percent lower at AUD 33.14 in Sydney Wednesday amid reports in Britain that the Anglo-Australian firm was facing a GBP 5 billion (USD 6.5 billion) lawsuit over the deadly Samarco dam failure in Brazil in 2015.

BHP has told Bloomberg that it "estimated that about 1.5 kilometers of track has been damaged and anticipates the recovery process to take about one week". While the driver was outside of the locomotive, the train commenced to run away.

BHP is planning to draw from its stockpiles at Port Hedland as it repairs its rail service, The West Australian reported.

"With no one on board, the train travelled for 92 km before being deliberately derailed at a set of points operated by the control centre, about 119 km from Port Headland (near Turner siding)".

However, the company now says it expects the reserves will not be sufficient to cover the period of disruption until partial rail operations can resume in "about one week". "We can not speculate on the outcome of the investigation", BHP said.

"We are working with the appropriate authorities to investigate the situation", BHP said in a statement to Reuters.

BHP will be questioned by the transport safety regulator.
