Threat of starvation loom as aid deliveries are blocked in Yemen

Threat of starvation loom as aid deliveries are blocked in Yemen

Aviation at the airport and worldwide aid efforts were not affected, Colonel Turki al-Malki said.

The Saudi Royal Air Force intercepted a missile over Najran on Friday, fired by the Houthi militia, according to the Arab coalition supporting legitimacy in Yemen.

He said a press conference will be held Friday afternoon to provide evidence that the airport is being used by the Houthi to launch attacks.

Al-Masirah said more than 30 Saudi air raids had targeted the al-Dulaimi base and its adjacent areas.

The latest fighting comes a day after the Yemeni government said it welcomed efforts to restore peace following calls by key United States officials and the UN's envoy to Yemen Martin Griffiths for warring parties to come to the table "within a month".

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said Yemen is teetering "on a precipice", appealing to the worldwide community to put an end to the Saudi war on the impoverished nation, more than three-and-a-half years after the regime and a number of its allies invaded the peninsular country.

Meanwhile, fighting in the Hodeida province has intensified in the past days, security officials said.

Saber Abdulwahed, a journalist covering the battle, told The National that fierce battles between the forces of Al Amalikah, backed by the UAE armed forces, and the Houthis have been going on for hours in the south and east of the city.

Mashat said that the department would attempt to control tribes, and placing tribal sheikhs loyal to the Houthis as heads of the department so they can mobilize their followers to fight on Houthi fronts.

In particular fighting has brokenout in regions surrounding the largest hospital in the port city of Hodeidah, which has made it hard to access those most in need, including children. The killing prompted critics to urge an end to American arms sales to the kingdom and a reappraisal of US military support for the Saudi-led Arab coalition that has been bombing Iranian-supported Houthi rebels, sometimes at the expense of killing civilians.

The sources in Hodeidah said fighting was heard in areas near the airport and the university, and Apache helicopters were spotted in the sky.

On Friday, it conducted airstrikes on Sana, the Houthi-occupied capital.

The blockage of aid shipments has threatened starvation in Yemen, warned the United Nations, as fighting between the Yemeni government, backed by a Saudi-led coalition, and Houthi rebels, reportedly backed by Iran, continues.

Over the past few months, the USA has said little about the war, which has led to one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.

On Tuesday it was reported that the real death toll in Yemen was likely five times higher than the official count given.
