Trump blames Secret Service for canceled visit to WWI cemetery in France

Trump blames Secret Service for canceled visit to WWI cemetery in France

His press secretary Sarah Sanders insisted heavy rain had caused "near-zero visibility".

Not among them: Trump, a day after he riled up his critics by canceling a visit to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery in France, the final resting place of almost 2,000 US soldiers killed in the World War I battle of Belleau Wood. But light steady rain and a low cloud ceiling prevented his helicopter from traveling to the site.

Donald Trump didn't attend an event honouring United States military dead because he didn't want to disrupt the traffic in Paris, the White House explained on Sunday.

The US president also opted to miss the Paris Peace Forum, which is run by his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron and began on Sunday afternoon.

Meanwhile diplomat Nicholas Burns, who served in both Republican and Democratic administrations in the U.S., said: "Did the President really not visit the American military cemetery today in France?"

On Saturday, Trump was criticized for failing to visit a second American cemetery about 60 miles outside of Paris because bad weather grounded the helicopter he planned to take.

Trump's decision to stay in a Paris hotel instead of driving 50 miles to honour America's war dead did not go down well.

Trump's grievances have been aired many times before.

Attending in Trump's place were the White House chief of staff, retired Marine Gen. John Kelly; the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Marine Gen. Joe Dunford; and several members of the White House staff.

The military office then presents the recommendation to the White House in collaboration with the Secret Service.

The White House cited unspecified "security protocols" for Trump missing out on the event.

The president was branded "pathetic" for not attending the World War I remembrance event in northern France honouring U.S. military.

The president even weighed in on wine, one of France's most-prized industries, to complain that France does not engage in fair trade practices with the USA over the alcoholic beverage.

"I helped plan all of President Obama's trips for eight years,"he wrote on Twitter".

He was to deliver remarks at the Suresnes American Cemetery and Memorial, located about 10km west of Paris, before returning to Washington.
