Trump hardens stance on Mexico border; says 15000 troops could be sent

The group of thousands of Central American migrants traveling north stopped Wednesday near the southern Mexican city of Juchitán de Zaragoza, about 1,000 miles away from the nearest us border entry in McAllen, Texas.

The United State is deploying more than 5,000 active-duty troops at the border, in addition to more than 2,000 National Guard troops already in place, to assist Border Patrol agents in processing members of the caravan.

Trump says that the U.S. was "going to be prepared" and that the migrants are "not coming into our country".

In addition to the 5,200 active duty troops now deploying, ABC News has learned that there are at least 2,500 additional forces that have already been placed on "prepared to deploy" orders in anticipation of future requests from Customs and Border Patrol (CBP). The current plan is to send the additional active duty troops to Brownsville, Texas, Nogales, Arizona and likely near San Diego, California.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis insisted that the Department of Defense doesn't engage in doing "stunts". A caravan last the spring ultimately fizzled to just about 200 people who reached the USA border at San Diego.

Trump has used the caravans to rally his Republican base before the November 6 midterm elections, declaring on several occasions their approach toward the United States constitutes a "national emergency".

Brushing aside accusations that his divisive rhetoric on immigration is stoking extremism, Trump made the troop announcement before flying to Florida for the last stage of campaigning ahead of next Tuesday's midterm elections.

Yesterday he repeated a threat to strip Central American nations of U.S. foreign aid if they fail to help him stop the caravans.

It was unclear whether the restrictions Trump was expected to propose would apply only to those traveling in the caravans or extend to all people trying to enter the country.

Trump had previously thanked Mexico for deploying anti-riot forces to the country´s southern border, and White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said on Fox News Wednesday that "Mexico has stepped up in an unprecedented way". "Nobody's coming in. We're not allowing people to come in".

A deployment of 15,000 would bring the military commitment on the border to roughly the same level as in war-torn Afghanistan.

Trump frequently describes illegal immigrants - a tiny minority of whom have formed groups to attempt walking hundreds of miles to the United States border - as "rapists" and "thugs".

"While National Guard troops are not physically arresting aliens or seizing contraband, these outcomes are attributed to the support they provide CBP, including monitoring sensors, operating detection systems and repairing existing infrastructure", a CBP spokesperson said.

It said yesterday that more than 7,000 troops would eventually support the Department of Homeland Security along the border.

President Donald Trump threw some red meat to his base this week and claimed he was prepared to defy the Constitution and end birthright citizenship in the US.

O'Shaughnessy did not have a cost estimate on Tuesday.
