Trump, Putin mark WWI centenary in sombre Paris ceremony

In London, Prince Charles laid the first wreath of red poppies, Britain's emblem of remembrance, at the nation's annual commemoration ceremony on behalf of his mother Queen Elizabeth II, who watched from a nearby balcony.

Police officers detain a protester who tried to jump in front of the motorcade of the United States president, Donald Trump.

The German chancellor will be first to speak Sunday afternoon at a Forum for Peace which Macron hopes will help foster multilateralism.

French officials, however, say - without elaborating - there was a misunderstanding by Trump about Macron's comments, noting the USA president told his French counterpart in their Saturday meeting: "I think we are much closer than it seems".

"When people feel their institutions can't protect them, they look for easy answers in populism, in nationalism, in closing borders, in shutting down trade, in xenophobia".

Whereas "after the Second World War we needed the USA to be present for our security, I think now the momentum for Europe is to build its own security and its own sovereignty", he said.

Speaking at the inaugural event yesterday, Macron said the world is still challenged with global warming, illegal migration, cyber crimes, terrorism, use of chemical weapons racism and discrimination among others.

Trump and Macron also agreed on the need for more European defense spending.

She warned against taking peace for granted, saying: "We have to work for it".

"There is a general sense and desire among many countries, including Canada to do whatever is possible to sustain the institutions of the worldwide order and practical, multilateral co-operation".

But where there's a will, there's a way, and despite initial reports that there'd been no conversation, Putin later said he did manage to sneak a chat with Trump at lunch.

"Macron (is) essentially making that point: that we can sustain co-operation, we must sustain co-operation".

President Trump, whose hardline nationalism has badly shaken the Western alliance, arrived in Paris on Friday criticising host President Macron for being "insulting".

The Russian Empire, which had a population of around 150 million people, suffered 1.7 million deaths during the war.

In his speech Macron said "what is important for the future is the way this image will be interpreted": As the "symbol of durable peace between nations" or as "a picture of a last moment of unity before the world goes down in new disorder".

Trump has recently brushed off criticism over identifying himself as a "nationalist", arguing that it's merely him advocating for putting "America first" in the actions he takes as president.

Separately, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel traveled a similar distance by vehicle to a commemorative event in northern France.

US President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump were among those in Paris for the commemorations, which coincide with Veterans Day in the United States.

The powerful remarks came as the world leaders gathered here have sought to mark the 100 years since the war by honoring those who served and died.

The two leaders appeared to make up as the weekend got under way.

President Macron lectured Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin on the evils of nationalism yesterday as world leaders gathered in Paris.

Rispal also said Trudeau's appearance at the Arc de Triomphe ceremony would be a reminder of Canada's contributions during the war, which aren't always recognized in Europe.
