Watch the emotional John Lewis Christmas advert 2018 with Elton John

John Lewis customer director Craig Inglis said: "The ad tells the story of why Elton's piano was more than just a gift and we hope to remind customers of that special moment when they've given a gift at Christmas time that they know will be treasured forever".

The retailer's 2018 Christmas advert is set to Elton John's iconic tune, Your Song, and takes you through Elton's life, from the present day right back to when he was a little boy and received the gift of his grandmother's piano that changed his life forever. The final scene shows a young Elton John (in the most adorable pjs, we might add) running down to see his mum and grandmother on Christmas day, and opening his present - a piano.

"Your Song" was first released almost 50 years ago and proves to be a timeless classic in the heartwarming Christmas advert that aims to spread the message that 'Sometimes a gift isn't just a gift".

The advert will first air on TV tonight at 9.15pm during Dark Heart on ITV, but keen-eared Coronation St and This Morning viewers may have noticed the themes were played exclusively on piano on Wednesday to tease the advert. We are so ready to step into Christmas...

"In our view, the way that TV works most powerfully is by telling a story".

While some praised it and said it made them cry (presumedly in a good way) many have criticised the ad for being too much about Elton John and not enough about Christmas.

And others pointed out that Elton John also has a biopic Rocketman coming out in May 2019, and that this advert is surely the ultimate promotional opportunity.

The shop, along with 14 further shops across the United Kingdom, will also have a Yamaha piano for customers to play.

Earlier this year when speculation began to circulate regarding the John Lewis Christmas advert, it was reported Elton would be receiving a large sum for his input.

The storefront of John Lewis" Oxford Street flagship has been changed to "John'. And Sir Elton donated a large chunk of his fee to his charity the Elton John Charitable Trust.
