Wayne Rooney returns to England squad for US friendly at Wembley

Wayne Rooney is set to come out of global retirement to make a farewell appearance for England against the United States next month.

Rooney has been a success since he moved to the USA to play for DC United, leading them to the MLS play-offs.

The game against the USA - three days before the decisive Nations League clash with Croatia at Wembley - has been designated as a charity fund-raiser by the FA. "I would like to thank Gareth Southgate and the Football Association for inviting me back and helping to support my foundation in the process", Rooney said in a statement.

He is the second-highest capped player for the country behind former goalkeeper Peter Shilton who won 125 caps.

England face a crucial UEFA Nations League match against Croatia a few days after the friendly against the United States, though Rooney is not expected to play any part in that game.

The Sun On Sunday exclusively revealed that Gareth Southgate and the FA have been planning how to pay tribute to the country's all-time leading goalscorer since he announced his retirement more than 14 months ago. "It's fitting that the match will be against the United States of America and I hope that both sets of fans enjoy the game".

"I have been hugely impressed with the progress of this young England team". Trying to help others is a particular focus of mine now through my Foundation.

Following reports from various UK media outlets, the English FA confirmed that the D.C. United striker will feature one more time for the national side.

Unfortunately, the fairytale ended this week as Rooney missed a penalty in a 3-2 penalty shootout defeat to the Columbus Crew. The 33-year-old is set to start among the substitutes but the intention is to bring him on to earn his 120th cap and seek to add to his record 53-goal haul.

"The connection between the FA and former England players is something that has always been very important to me", Southgate said.
