WhatsApp Geared Up to Show Ads in 'Status,' Confirms VP Chris Daniels

The feature could be seen as a great opportunity for Facebook to monetize WhatsApp and could be a repetition of how Instagram shows ads in its Status to users.

Facebook's native advertising system would power the advertisements to WhatsApp and this would help users to understand and participate in businesses through the messaging app. At an event in New Delhi, WhatsApp Vice President Chris Daniels said that advertisements in WhatsApp Status will be the service's "primary monetisation mode for the company".

The addition of advertisements was something that made WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton felt uncomfortable with up until his departure from the company in November 2017.

Now, according to Android Authority, WhatsApp has "confirmed that it would soon include ads in the app" after "almost 10 years..."

Like with Instagram stories, WhatsApp's status feature lets users broadcast text, photos and videos which disappear after 24 hours.

Acton left the messaging service company last September to start a foundation, after spending eight years with WhatsApp.

WhatsApp has been under fire in India over its platform being used to spread rumours that have led to violence in several parts of the country.

Daniels did not give any specific date of integrating ads to WhatsApp.

Facebook had acquired WhatsApp for United States dollars 19 billion.

WhatsApp users will likely notice something different with the app in the near future.

Instagram borrowed the concept of stories from the multimedia messaging app Snapchat as the owners were anxious about the "classy and niche" image that the app was picking up.

Earlier this year, WhatsApp announced it had over 1.5 billion active users, with over a billion groups and 65 billion messages sent every day. Pretty much every popular app has introduced Stories, a way to post about what you're doing at the moment or share an interesting or amusing post and having it deleted automatically within the next 24 hours.

"We're going to put ads in the "status" bar". Most people, including us at PCMag India, use WhatsApp for our day-to-day communication with family members, friends, and acquaintances. This monetizing idea from the CEO made Acton unhappy and made him leave the company in the first place.
