Wildfire triggers evacuation order for Malibu

The fire in Northern California began on Thursday near the town of Paradise.

Only a day after it began, the blaze near the town of Paradise had grown to almost 110 square miles, and investigators found the dead in vehicles that were torched by the flames.

The flames descended on Paradise so quickly that many people were forced to abandon their cars and run for their lives down the sole road through the mountain town.

"It's a very risky and very serious situation", Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said. The size of the fire is about 110 square miles, he said Friday.

The city of Malibu is under mandatory evacuation orders as the Woolsey fire continues to threaten Ventura County and its surrounding communities in California on Friday.

Pet owners walked their dogs on Zuma Beach, the winds whipping up the sand around them and fire engine sirens blaring nearby.

The Woolsey Fire has already scorched 8,000 acres and is at zero percent containment as of Friday, fire officials told Accuweather.

The fire in Paradise was reported shortly after daybreak Thursday.

Residents spoke of flames approaching their vehicles on the gridlocked roads and said electricity poles came crashing down. "I took a couple of videos of myself just to kind of have something to talk to and just tell my loved ones that I love them", she said.

"Things started exploding", said resident Gina Oviedo. We're doing everything we can to get people out of the affected areas'.

The fire overnight jumped the 101 Freeway in the western end of Los Angeles County, forcing a shutdown of the major artery after drivers in some cases were forced to make U-turns and drive the opposite direction to avoid flames.

The Earl Warren Showgrounds in Santa Barbara, at 3400 Calle Real, was opening at noon Friday to accept large animals for evacuated residents, according to Ventura County officials.

California Governor-elect Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency to provide assistance to the fire-hit areas.

United States media reports that schools have also been closed and evacuated due to the fire, and animals have been moved out of the LA Zoo in Griffith Park.

Residents of the beachside city of Malibu have been ordered to evacuate as three fast-moving wildfires raged in California on Friday morning, including one that also spurred the evacuation of 75,000 homes near a city that was still reeling from a mass shooting.
