Woman to face court over alleged strawberry contamination

Police have charged a woman over the strawberry needle contamination scandal that saw truckloads of fruit dumped, punnets recalled, and supermarkets forced to throw out their supplies.

The arrested woman, who has not been named, is set to appear in a Brisbane court on Monday.

Queensland Police coordinated a national investigation with multiple government, law enforcement and intelligence agencies and setup a dedicated taskforce to identify and locate the person responsible for the contamination.

A 50-year-old woman was arrested Sunday after a "complex investigation" into the alleged contamination of strawberries in Queensland, the Queensland Police Service said in a statement.

Police said, following an extensive investigation, officers arrested a 50-year-old woman this afternoon.

Another needle allegedly found in a punnet.

Detective Superintendent Jon Wacker from the Drug and Serious Crime Group said the investigation was "major and unprecedented" with "a lot of complexities involved".

The incidents led to a deep panic in Australian society, and laws are now being rushed through parliament to increase the possible punishments for food contamination.

"Controlling bad public behaviour, including product tampering, is a challenge beyond the control of farmers".

Thousands of strawberries were left to rot in Queensland after the needles were found buried within a few.

However, sales were returning to normal, the association said.
