21 injured, 100 homes damaged in south IL tornado

IL residents are still recovering Saturday morning after multiple tornadoes touched down in the central part of the state.

The National Weather Service has two teams in central IL right now to investigate the damage, which will take a few days to complete. He said that number may grow because crews continue surveying three other sites to determine if storm damage there was also caused by tornadoes.

Illinois' previous December tornado record was 21 storms during an outbreak on Dec. 18-19, 1957.

While there are reports of injuries, it's not yet clear how many people are hurt, or the severity of those injuries. "It all goes out to the folks right here in our community".

Clean-up efforts are underway in central IL after numerous tornadoes tore through the area over the weekend. Officials say 21 people were hospitalized there, one critically, and crews responded to over a dozen houses that contained trapped people, per ABC News.

Miller said preliminary estimates are that the Taylorville tornado may have been an EF2, which indicates wind speeds as high as 135 miles per hour. Majority were discharged within hours of their arrival.

It remains unclear how many tornadoes blew through the region, but it won't be as many as 22, Miller said. It could take several more days to know for sure. According to data from the Tornado History Project, the last time tornadoes were reported in IL in December was in 2015 when six tornados broke out. It was rated an EF2.

About 10 minutes later, a second weaker tornado was confirmed less than 10 miles (16 kilometers) away near the town of Rudy, Arkansas. He said at least 100 homes had major damage, including his own. Its path was intermittent and mostly caused damage to trees and to some structures.
