Bournemouth and Brighton were also paired in the draw made at Stamford Bridge, the home of defending champion Chelsea.

The draw will be conducted by former Chelsea player-manager Ruud Gullit and ex-Manchester United and Liverpool midfielder Paul Ince.

Arsenal will hope to fair better in the famous old competition this term compared to last season, when they were knocked out in the third round by Nottingham Forest.

The Blues have had a brilliant start to the Premier League and are just seven points behind league leaders Manchester City who they will face this weekend.

Cardiff will travel to League One Gillingham, while Newcastle face Championship Blackburn at St James' Park and Crystal Palace are at home to League Two Grimsby.

Teams began to book their places in the third round of the FA Cup on Saturday afternoon with a number of second round ties being played.

Arsenal, [8.8], will play away at either non-league Solihull or League One side Blackpool in the third round, while their north London rivals Tottenham, [9.4], will play either Tranmere or Southport.

Should the Seasiders overcome their National League opponents, who they drew 0-0 with on Friday night, Pool will welcome the Gunners to Bloomfield Road.

The matches will be played between January 4 and January 7.
