Bahrain says work in Syria embassy 'continuing' after UAE move

The Bahraini embassy in the Syrian capital, Damascus, was closed following the start of a popular uprising against President Bashar al-Assad in 2011, which escalated into a brutal and multifaceted war that has killed hundreds of thousands of people, displaced millions and destroyed the country's infrastructure.

- On December 27, the UAE reopens its embassy in Damascus, the first Gulf country to do so, during a ceremony attended by diplomats.

Gargash noted that UAE conducted a careful examination of the situation in Syria prior to bringing the embassy back.

During the Syrian conflict that began in 2011, over 30 countries closed their embassies or relocated diplomatic staff to Beirut, including the United States, Saudi Arabia, and the European Union mission.

The UAE flag was raised at the embassy, shut since the early months of Syria's conflict almost eight years ago.

Local reports said that some maintenance work was carried out inside the embassy ahead of its opening.

"The ministry stressed Bahrain's keenness on continuing relations with Syria, underscoring the importance of consolidating the Arab role so as to maintain Syrian independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity", said the statement.

"We welcome any step for the return of all Arab embassies to Syria", Faisal Mekdad, the deputy foreign minister in Syria, said in recent remarks while answering a question about the return of the UAE embassy to Syria.

Iran, along with Russian Federation, has been a key ally of Syria's President Bashar al Assad.

Yesterday afternoon, the flag of the UAE was hoisted above the building and the charges d'affairs returned to take up residence.

Earlier this month, Sudanese President Omar Bashir was the first Arab League country leader to visit Syria in eight years.

Khalifa later defended the meeting in an interview, saying it was unplanned and calling Syria a "brotherly, Arab nation".

Early in the civil war, Gulf Arab states supported the opposition seeking to oust Assad.

Meanwhile, in December, United States President Donald Trump announced the withdrawal of all 2,000 US troops from Syria, clearing the path for Turkey to launch planned combat operations into northeastern Syria against an alliance of Kurdish and Arab groups that it views as an extension of an armed group fighting inside Turkey.

Russian Federation helped Assad fight fires across the country and restore control over vast swathes of territory.
