Cam Newton Injury Flips Falcons to Favorites Over Panthers in Week 16

Anybody who has been watching the Carolina Panthers over the past few weeks can probably tell that something has not been right with Cam Newton.

The fourth-year outside linebacker has dealt with a shoulder issue throughout much of the season, but appeared in 14 games, including 11 starts.

In a corresponding move, the Panthers promoted undrafted rookie quarterback Kyle Allen to the 53-man roster from the practice squad.

Cam Newton won't be playing again this year, but they aren't putting him on injured reserve.

"I'm pretty oblivious to the recovery time and I would not have expected me to still have things that are lingering from that, but at the end of the day it is what it is", said the quarterback two weeks ago.

As noted by, his passer rating (52.5) and completion percentage (55.2) were both season lows.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Taylor Heinicke (6) warms up during practice on Wednesday, December 19, 2018. In the Panthers' 12-9 loss to the Saints Monday night, he threw for just 133 yards, no touchdowns and an interception.

During Carolina's six-game losing streak, Newton has thrown at least one interception in every game.

Cam was a real bright spot for the Panthers, and with the likes of Ian Thomas, D.J. Moore, Christian McCaffrey, and Curtis Samuel emerging as a talent quartet on offense, Newton could have a big 2019.

Newton was not made available for comment on Wednesday, but discussed how hard it's been with not knowing what is wrong with the shoulder after Monday night's loss to the Saints.

"I wish I could say what the injury is because I don't really know what it is either", Newton told reporters.

As for Newton's long-time friend, centre Ryan Kalil, he said as hard as the decision is, it is a smart move for the organization when it comes to the long term. So I'm excited for him to show everybody else what he can do.

"He's still a young guy and he's got a lot of football left in him", Kalil said. I know how frustrating that is for him. This season, Heinicke has been active for five games and played in four of them.

Wide receiver Jarius Wright said other teams have been able to defend the Panthers differently with Newton at quarterback, knowing he wasn't going to throw downfield as he's done in the past. "So having Taylor out there on Sunday will keep everyone on their toes".
