Cardinals acquire Diamondbacks slugger Paul Goldschmidt in blockbuster trade

Paul Goldschmidt's exit Wednesday from the Arizona Diamondbacks may open the door for two hot-hitting infielders who held down the corners most of last season for the Reno Aces, Christian Walker and Kevin Cron.

The trade: St. Louis Cardinals acquire 1B Paul Goldschmidt from the Arizona Diamondbacks for right-handed starting pitcher Luke Weaver, C Carson Kelly, infielder Andy Young and a Round B compensation pick in the 2019 draft.

Goldschmidt, 31, has been a National League All-Star each of the past six seasons and he's a four-time (2013, 2015, 2017, 2018) NL Silver Slugger award victor and three-time (2013, 2015, 2017) Rawlings Gold Glove award recipient. The Cardinals believed they needed a boost in the middle of their lineup to compete with the likes of Milwaukee and the Cubs in the NL Central. The quiet slugger was selected by Arizona in the eighth round of the 2009 draft and made his major league debut in 2011. Since then, he has compiled a.297 batting average with 209 home runs and 710 RBI. "We understand that. We've understood that for a long time". He recorded a 4.95 ERA in 136.1 innings over 30 appearances (including 25 starts) with St. Louis in 2018, but had been better the year before with a 3.88 ERA in 60.1 innings.
