Chief financial officer of China's Huawei arrested in Canada

Canadian authorities have arrested the chief financial officer of Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei Technologies in Vancouver, B.C.

In a statement issued exclusively to the News from Huawei's corporate head office, the company explained how Meng was "provisionally detained by the Canadian authorities on behalf of the United States of America, which seeks the extradition of..."

"As there is a publication ban in effect, we can not provide any further detail at this time", McLeod said. "The ban was sought by Ms Meng".

USA authorities have been probing Huawei, one of the world's largest makers of telecommunications network equipment, since at least 2016 for allegedly shipping US-origin products to Iran and other countries in violation of United States export and sanctions laws, sources told Reuters in April.

Meng, the 46-year-old daughter of Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei, has previously been suspected of involvement in Huawei's alleged ties to Iran.

"At the request of the U.S. side, the Canadian side arrested a Chinese citizen not violating any American or Canadian law".

Reuters reported in 2013 that Ms. Meng served on the board of a Hong Kong-based Skycom Tech Co.

Ms. Meng's arrest comes amid a year-long USA government campaign against a company it views as a national-security threat. Meng adopted her mother's surname.

"The company believes the Canadian and USA legal systems will ultimately reach a just conclusion".

US authorities are investigating whether Chinese tech giant Huawei violated sanctions on Iran.

In August, U.S. president Donald Trump signed an act to ban the use of Huawei components or services that are "essential" or "critical" to the systems they are used.

In 2012, the House of Representatives released a report warning Huawei poses a national security threat to the USA, and American companies and its government should avoid doing business with the company.

GCSB Minister Andrew Little said the decision to turn down the overseas network provider was because the technology was too risky - not because the company is Chinese.

The report said existing Huawei equipment at the firm's current 3G and 4G networks would also be removed.
