Confronting drone footage captures devastating aftermath of Indonesia tsunami

Indonesia is a Muslim majority nation but has a Christian minority, with services held Tuesday to celebrate Christmas - and pray for those affected by the deadly tsunami.

At least 154 people remain missing.

Military troops, government personnel and volunteers were searching along debris-strewn beaches. "The vehicle was swaying in the waves and we thought we would all die", Hayati said.

Indonesia's Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) said the alert level had been raised from level two to three because of fluctuating ongoing eruptions.

"You know, people call Indonesia a supermarket for disasters - really you have everything here, and you have it quite a lot", she said.

2010: A 7.5 magnitude quake hit one of the Mentawai islands, off Sumatra, triggering a tsunami of up to 10 meters that destroyed dozens of villages and killed around 300 people. Also, over July and August, a series of earthquakes hit the northern Lombok region, sparking landslides and collapsing buildings that left more than 400 people dead.

The powerful tsunami struck Saturday night without warning, sweeping over popular beaches and inundating tourist hotels and coastal communities, leaving a trail of death and destruction in its wake. That temblor and tsunami killed an estimated 2,100 people. The last buoys stopped working in 2012, sparking more demands for a new system.

The death toll has risen in the aftermath of a devastating tsunami in Indonesia.

When the tsunami slammed into his house, the panicked Ahok fought to reach his sleeping 70-year-old mother and one-year-old son but then he saw his wife about to drown in the swirling waters. I want to say it straight away. "Seconds later I saw people running from the tsunami wave shouting 'Tsunami!"

It took just 24 minutes after the landslide for waves to hit land, and there was no early warning for those living on the coast. "Every time I see them (on TV), I feel really, really sad". President Joko Widodo - who is up for re-election in April, the Journal noted - assured voters this week that he would fund and install an early detection system in 2019.

Widodo claimed the tsunami which struck over the weekend was beyond Indonesia's now ability to predict. Scientists described the event as an "underwater landslide" that came as a deadly surprise because it was not preceded by a massive quake.

"We could be rolled to the sea by the waves if we're not alert and careful", he said.

"This (tsunami) is caused by several factors".

The Krakatoa Observatory, which is monitoring the crater, warned that volcanic activity was still high. "That's why we are in coordination with other agencies such as the maritime and geology agencies", she said.

The Saturday evening tsunami followed the collapse of an area of the volcano island of about 64 hectares, or about 90 soccer pitches.

Rescuers and residents look for survivors along the coast in South Lampung on South Sumatra on 23 December, 2018, after the area was hit by a tsunami a day earlier.
