First pediatric flu death of 2018-2019 season confirmed in MI

It is the highest weekly number reported since the season officially started October 1 but far below the numbers typically reported when flu is widespread.

In Michigan, two children died past year due to flu-related complications.

"Flu is a contagious respiratory disease caused by different strains of the influenza virus and can result in mild to severe illness", reported Lynn Sutfin from the MDHHS.

The Wyoming Department of Health said Thursday the number of flu cases so far this season remains low, but they're beginning to pick up.

The County Health and Human Services Agency publishes the weekly Influenza Watch report, which tracks key flu indicators and summarizes influenza surveillance in the region.

Last year's flu season was the deadliest since 2009 when H1N1 broke out.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that everyone 6 months and older get a flu shot every year.

The flu vaccine is available at doctors' offices, community clinics, and retail pharmacies.

When you get a flu shot you're not only protecting yourself, but also everybody you come into contact with, Redfield said.

Even if a person does become sick after vaccination, research shows those who are vaccinated develop less severe symptoms and recover more quickly than those who are not. "I'd love to see us get the vaccine rate over 75 percent", he added. Influenza A (H1N1) pdm09 viruses are predominating in most areas of the country.

Fifty-six percent of those who did not receive a shot cited what the survey called "a common misperception" about the vaccine to explain why they hadn't done so. "But remember, it takes about two weeks for the vaccine to take full effect". Those at high-risk for complications include patients 65 and older, people with chronic medical issues, pregnant women and children younger than 5.
