Geminid meteor shower: Where, when and how to see it

According to Nasa's official blog post, this Year's Geminid Event will be more visible and clear to our eyes.

One of the most awaited celestial events of the year, the Geminid meteor shower, will bring visibly luminous shooting stars across the sky on December 13 and 14. It's an object that has long fascinated astronomers, and the Japanese Space Agency has plans to visit it in a mission called Destiny+, which will launch in 2022.

The Geminid meteor shower is set to let up to sky tonight and in the early hours of tomorrow morning.

The Geminids will increase to a maximum of 100 per hour around 2 a.m., according to NASA.

The shooting stars produced by the Geminids meteor shower appear to come from the constellation of Gemini, the Twins.

December is here and so is the Geminid Meteor Shower!

The annual Geminid meteor shower is putting on a show of shooting stars this month, and a police officer in IN captured quite a performance from one particular fireball this week. Based on my own observations under good conditions with no moon in the sky, I typically see around 30 to 40 per hour.

You don't need any special equipment to watch the meteor shower - the naked eye is the best instrument to use.

The meteor shower comes close to earth every December, making it easy to spot when the sky is clear. And that rate seems to be steadily increasing since it was first observed in 1862. NASA recommends waiting until 10:30 PM local time to go out.

Those willing to fearless the chilling December cold can witness the spectacular light show simply by finding a spot from where the sky is visible clearly; no extra equipment needed. You will destroy the experience in lights. Here's how to find Gemini in the sky, although you don't have to look directly at it to be able to see tonight's lights.

Today's Google Doodle celebrates one of the most exciting astronomical events that nearly anyone can enjoy for themselves - the Geminid meteor shower. Every year, Earth passes through a cloud of debris from an asteroid named 3200 Phaethon.

As it travels it leaves a trail, and when Earth passes through that trail each year in December, the bits stream through the Earth's atmosphere and create what's known as the Geminid meteor shower.
