Illegal Immigrant Fugitive Caught After Gunning Down California Police Officer

A man suspected of killing police officer Ronil Singh this week in Newman, California, has been arrested, Deputy Blake Edwards with the Kern County Sheriff's Office said Friday.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, was in the country illegally, according to earlier statements by Stanislaus County Sheriff Adam Christianson.

Gustavo Perez Arriaga has been arrested by police for allegedly shooting Singh, who had pulled him over during a traffic stop.

"We can't ignore the fact that this could've been preventable", he said, adding that California Senate Bill 54 - which became law a year ago - prohibited his department "from sharing any information with ICE about this criminal gang member".

Arriaga was trying to reach Mexico, Christianson said. They said the shooter fled the scene in his vehicle before another officer arrived.

Singh's brother, Reggie, thanked the officers and individuals who helped capture Arriaga.

"He came to America with one goal, and that was to serve this country", Richardson said.

"This is a criminal illegal alien with prior criminal activity that should have been reported to ICE", Christianson said.

The shooting on Wednesday came amid a political fight over immigration, with President Donald Trump and congressional Democrats at odds over funding for a border wall that has forced a partial government shutdown.

Within just a couple of minutes, Singh got back on the radio to report that shots had been fired and he was hit.

A press conference was held Friday Dec. 28 at the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department in regards to significant developments in the Newman investigation. The Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department shared images of the suspect from a convenience store, in the hopes that someone would recognize him.

During the conference, Christianson took aim at California's sanctuary laws, stating that the suspect was an illegal immigrant from Mexico who has claimed to be involved with a criminal gang called the Surenos.

Family members of the slain officer attended the news conference, including Singh's brother who broke down into tears.

A friend of Singh, Harinder Singh Toor, posted a photo of the apparent apprehension of the suspect on Facebook.

Singh also was an immigrant, coming legally from his native Fiji to fulfill his dream of becoming a police officer, authorities said.

He said one of the last photos Singh posed for was of him standing in front of an American flag and next to a Christmas tree outside the Newman police station.

Singh leaves behind a wife and 5-month-old son.

His was the first death in the line of duty in the Newman Police Department.
