NYPD reviewing 'troubling' video of officers prying baby from mom's arms

NYPD reviewing 'troubling' video of officers prying baby from mom's arms

"You're hurting my son!" are the words Headley screamed as she was forcibly arrested and her child grabbed from her arms.

"She said, 'Well, I'm not gonna stand with my son, '" Ferguson recalled, according to CBS New York. She shouts repeatedly: "They're hurting my son".

"Being poor is not a crime", James told the outlet.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) and the New York City Human Resources Administration are now reviewing the 7 December arrest.

"The police should not be a tool to further exacerbate a situation between a (member of the) public who is seeking some type of assistance", Adams said.

Headley was arrested and charged with resisting arrest, acting in a manner injurious to a child, endangering the welfare of a child and trespassing. "We did not request any bail, and Ms. Headley's hold is in connection with a warrant from New Jersey". But she refused, so police were called, CBS2's Duddridge reported.

The incident began on Friday just before 1 p.m. when police responded to a harassment complaint at the Fort Greene Food Stamp Center in Brooklyn.

'She had her baby in her hands the whole time. "She refused to comply with officers' orders, and was then taken into custody".

The video illustrates in graphic clarity the show of force implicit in that police statement.

Jacqueline Jenkins says she's still coming to grips with a jarring video that shows police officers tugging away at her daughter's baby.

A police officer who waved a stun gun at teenagers near Midwood High School in Brooklyn in March 2017 is facing disciplinary charges after Vitale recorded the incident. They say security guards took her down and that's when police tried to arrest her, which is when cellphone video picks up.

"Oh my God! Look what they're doing to her!" one person is heard yelling the background.

Headley arrived at 9 a.m. and waited at the office for four hours. There were reportedly no chairs for her to sit in, so she sat on the floor. "If it's wrong in Mexico, then it's wrong in New York City". It added that investigators were looking into the incident with the HRA. "You want to ride the lightning?" the officer asked one of the teenagers, after pushing her with his baton.

At Monday's news conference, Adams compared the incident to President Donald Trump's controversial policy of removing children from their families at the border. He called the arrest "a blemish on our entire city". "Clearly our Police Department, the most well-trained police department in the country, should be able to de-escalate a situation with a baby and the mother without duplicating Trump security removal of children". "It is not uncommon for people who are in offices like this.to find themselves arrested because of an incident that wasn't really criminal".

"This is supposed to be a place where families come to regain their dignity and respect, and not have it ripped from us", he said.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio called the incident "disturbing" and promised answers following public outrage.

The NYPD said it was called after security failed to remove Headley "due to her disorderly conduct towards others, and for obstructing the hallway". "NYPD & HRA will get to the bottom of what happened", he tweeted.

City Council Speaker Corey Johnson is also calling for a thorough investigation.

"I'd like to understand what transpired and how these officers or the NYPD justifies this", he noted. "It's hard to watch this video", he wrote on Twitter.

The Brooklyn district attorney's office said it was independently investigating and "reviewing all available videos and interviewing witnesses with the intention of reaching a swift decision". He said two HRA employees, whom he described as peace officers, are being placed on modified duty pending that investigation.
