PETA Mocked For Demanding End to ‘Speciesist’ Language

"Mentally abusing entire minorities is now being treated the same as saying phrases that have animals in them".

The last scenario is what is now playing out in the Twittersphere, as PETA took to its account to tweet about how we should remove "speciesist" language - language that is unfriendly to animals - from our vocabularies.

The animal rights group, which stands for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, is campaigning for people to remove "anti-animal" idioms such as "bring home the bacon" from their everyday language. In place of taking "the bull by the horns", how about taking "the flower by the thorns?" The group tweeted the alternative sayings Tuesday morning.

The internet laughed, and objected.

And of course, Twitter users had plenty of their own opinions.

PETA has been heavily criticised for comparing "speciesism" to racism, homophobia and ableism.

However, many people took to Twitter to suggest more phrases, or mock the suggestion. Thousands of people replied to PETA's tweets, complaining about the comparison.

It's not the first time PETA has been criticized while engaging marginalized communities.

PETA's tweet recommended using substitute language when referencing animals. "All we can say is this: Human supremacists need to start thinking about other species' interests in not being exploited".
