Sharp rise in flu cases across state

The Cuomo administration says the number of confirmed cases of influenza is rising across NY state, with more than 5,400 people coming down with the illness so far this season.

Dr. Heather Young, who works in the Infectious Disease department at Denver Health, said the flu season has not yet peaked in our state. The report shows that 376 people have been hospitalized with the virus since the flu season started in October. The dashboard displays the number of laboratory-confirmed influenza cases by county, week and influenza type (A, B or not specified) for the current season and the three previous seasons.

Persons who have not received a flu shot this season are urged to do so.

The season typically does not peak until February or later, but so far this season, NY has had 5,400 laboratory-confirmed cases in 58 counties; Hamilton County is one of just four counties with no confirmed cases last week. For adults ages 18 years and older, flu vaccination rates rose from 38.5% to 44.9%.

At this time, most of the state is experiencing mild flu activity. During this period, there have been 1,305 influenza-related hospitalizations reported, and one influenza-associated pediatric death. To date, there are already 11 pediatric deaths recorded for the 2018-2019 flu season.

Last week, State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker declared that influenza is prevalent in New York State. As of December 22, nine states are experiencing high flu activity, while seven states and Puerto Rico are experiencing moderate flu activity.

Hand-washing, staying away from sick people and avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth can help prevent the flu.
