Sudan's capital announces suspension of school classes over growing protests

At least one protester was killed in the northern Sudanese city of Atbara on Friday, the security chief said, as people took to the streets across the country for a third day against price rises and corruption.

The demonstrations, which come amid acute cash shortages and inflation of nearly 70 percent, represent one of the most serious challenges to al-Bashir, 74, since he took power in an Islamist-supported military coup in 1989.

Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir has made his first public comments about ongoing anti-government protests, urging citizens to reject what he called "attempts to plant frustration".

It said its members will march Tuesday on Khartoum's Republican Palace and submit a written demand for the president to step down.

They spread to the east of the country.

Protests by tens of thousands of people have taken place in at least 13 towns with nine people shot dead over two days by security forces, Amnesty International said December 21.

The clips show the fans in the stadium chanting "The people want to bring down the regime", one of the main slogans of the Arab Spring uprisings of 2010 and 2011. "For the medical sector, there is complete destruction for the infrastructure, for the access of health services, for the cost of treatment, for the absence of life-saving medication, so the health sector is similar to education and other sectors in Sudan where there is an overall failure from the current government, therefore they have to step down and hand over the power to a government that can lead and can provide a better life for the people of Sudan", added Abdelgalil.

Police used teargas to disperse protesters, witnesses said.

"We hope to shed light on the issues facing people in Sudan, and gain the attention of the worldwide community", she told Al Jazeera.

"We urge you to immediately withdraw Mr Atta's USA visa, require his departure from the United States, and make a determination as to whether Mr Atta is subject to sanctions under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act", they further said.

Sudan has been facing a mounting economic crisis over the past year.

"Fuel and bread shortages may have triggered protests across the country, but other factors now seem to be helping to keep them going", Al Jazeera's Hiba Morgan, reporting from the capital, Khartoum, said.

The sub-Saharan nation has been suffering from economic difficulties that include an acute foreign currency shortage and a soaring inflation, now running at close to 70 percent.

"This is the second and stronger wave of what happened in September 2013". Mahdi has likewise called for the government to go.

What comes after the protests depends on the government, he said.

The ruling National Congress Party said it understands the people's anger over the economic situation, but spokesman Ibrahim el-Sadik accused Israel and "left-wing parties" of being behind the protests, according to AFP news agency. Protesters also gathered in several eastern neighborhoods of Khartoum and in the southern city of Madani, witnesses said.

Sudan's security authorities on Saturday announced the arrest of a sabotage cell in the capital Khartoum, official SUNA news agency reported.
