William Barr nominated by Donald Trump to be United States attorney general

The president told reporters outside the White House that he will appoint William Barr to replace Jeff Sessions as Attorney General as several media outlets predicted yesterday.

Barr was George H.W. Bush's attorney general between 1991 and 1993.

Barr not only said that an investigation of this would be above-board, he claimed it was necessary in the interest of justice.

Barr's confirmation process in the Senate will likely still take weeks.

After leaving the Justice Department, Barr served as the general counsel and executive vice president of Verizon Communications but retired from the role in 2008. Sources cautioned to CNN, however, that Trump makes the final decision.

Barr is now employed with the Kirkland & Ellis law firm in Washington, D.C. There, he still advises corporations with enforcement and regulatory issues, according to The Washington Post.

The issue many Democrats and some Republicans may have with a possible Barr nomination are statements he made in the past about Hillary Clinton, James Comey and the president's authority to investigate the Uranium One deal. He's been mentioned as a potential nominee, and Senator Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican who is in line to lead the Judiciary Committee next year and oversee Barr's confirmation, said he would be a good choice.

The appointment of a new attorney general would come at a precarious time as special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation, which the department oversees, is showing signs of entering its final stages.

Trump heavily derided Mueller's team earlier this year for being comprised of many registered Democrats and Democratic donors. "He's the kind of person who could get confirmed".

"To the extent it is not pursuing these matters, the department is abdicating its responsibility", he was quoted in a November 14, 2017 article.

Barr also said James Comey's firing was "understandable" and that he "crossed a basic line" and "transgressed" in his role as Federal Bureau of Investigation director.

One of the people who spoke to the AP said there have been discussions among senior administration officials about Barr's willingness to do the job, and said the belief was that he was open to doing it if asked. I was happy that GTE's conduct of the litigation was considerably more aggressive than that of other similarly situated carriers who were also required to share their facilities and equipment with new competitors under the Act.
