Attorneys for suspect in Closs case 'relying on integrity of judicial system'

Attorneys for suspect in Closs case 'relying on integrity of judicial system'

Jayme was found on Thursday in the small town of Gordon, some 70 miles (112km) from her home in Barron.

Minutes later, police arrested the man she identified as her captor, Jake Thomas Patterson, and have charged him with abducting Closs and fatally shooting her parents. He was jailed on suspicion of kidnapping and homicide.

Newly released photos from the family of Jayme Closs say she is "full of big smiles" Saturday.

Jayme's grandfather, Robert Naiberg, told the AP on Friday that he'd been praying for months for the call he received Thursday about his granddaughter being found alive.

"'She's talking, she's doing very well, ' they said", Smith told Good Morning America.

Naiberg said his daughter called him with the news, saying Jayme reported having been held by "a guy in the woods" but was able to escape.

Erik told police he "thought she was 17". Smith said she would see Closs on Friday afternoon. His initial court hearing is scheduled for Monday and records show he doesn't have an attorney yet. The discovery ended an all-out search that gripped the state, with many people fearing the worst the longer she was missing.

The Kasinskas said Jayme's emotions were "pretty flat" while they waited for the police and she refused offers of food and water. "My family can not express how happy we are". We had too much love and support around us for us to give up, ' her aunt said.

A woman who has a cabin nearby was walking along the isolated road when she saw Jayme on the cold evening, just about dusk, without a coat or gloves.

"She said that this person's name was Jake Patterson, 'he killed my parents and took me,"' Kristin Kasinskass said. "She did not talk about why or how".

"He was like 11, 12 when I would have had him as a student", Kristin Kasinkas said.

On Thursday, Jayme escaped the home in Douglas County - about an hour north of Barron - where she was being held.

"These funds are going to go towards the journey with the family as they help Jayme through whatever it may be...driving to take care of her, taking her to the clinic, medical costs or anything", said De Andriano.

Fitzgerald says authorities don't know of any social media connection between Patterson and the girl.

"My kids and I - we went downstairs", she said. "It was awesome. The stress, the relief - it was awesome", Barron County Sheriff Fitzgerald said, describing the moment he learned Jayme had been found.

"We believe Jayme was the target, and he (Patterson) was getting rid of possible barriers to taking her", Fitzgerald told CNN's Jean Casarez on Saturday.

He wonders whether Patterson was somehow stalking Jayme.

The cabin is in Eau Claire Acres, a development about 10 miles (16 kilometres) outside the tiny town of Gordon, nestled in the dense evergreen forests of northwestern Wisconsin that are popular with vacationers in the summer and snowmobilers and ATV riders in the winter. No one pressed her to talk, he said, adding that Federal Bureau of Investigation agents and doctors advised them to let her speak when she's ready. James Kuffel, the township's lone constable, said he knows nearly everyone in the area but has never encountered the Pattersons.

He may have worked at another business in Barron but that hasn't been confirmed, the sheriff said.
