Cadillac shows off its nameless-for-now first full electric

A large luxury crossover utility is inherently more profitable for any automaker than a compact hatchback, and those profits plus the falling costs seen by GM should ensure the electric Cadillac will not lose money.

The new SUV EV will take on the likes of Tesla's own electric SUV, the Model X.

Although information is incredibly light at this point, this is GM signaling to the market it will not be sitting on its hands as EVs begin to come into the mainstream.

Cadillac is a division of General Motors which announced last week its intent to move towards an all-electric future. Those details will be revealed closer to launch, we're told. According to the company-issued report, this Cadillac EV will be based on GM's next-gen EV architecture. "It will represent the height of luxury and innovation while positioning Cadillac as the pinnacle of mobility".

"The first-ever Cadillac XT6 delivers a compelling blend of spaciousness, safety and convenience features for customers who thrive on doing it all", said Steve Carlisle, Cadillac president. The unnamed SUV likely marks the first of many announcements surrounding Cadillac's electrified offerings, as the automaker has pledged to cascade a cadence of vehicle introductions every six months over the next two years. But, other body styles will follow this crossover, and in short succession too - aforementioned flexibility means each future EV will have a short design and development time.

GM said the batteries and drive units will be the most advanced in this platform. Now it appears GM is reverting to historic practice, and plans to launch new long-range electric vehicles from the top of its brand portfolio.

It can accommodate front-, rear-, or all-wheel drive configurations, and the battery system output can be varied depending on the specific vehicle and the needs of its buyers.
