Chicago Bears DC Vic Fangio accepts job in Denver

Elway said he also plans to take a self-assessment this month to review the moves he's made that have led to Denver's three-year playoff drought since Peyton Manning retired a month after the Broncos' Super Bowl 50 title. The following year (1986) the Bears set the National Football League record for scoring defense and led the National Football League in scoring defense again in 1988, all under Vince Tobin, who himself would go on to a head-coaching post with the Arizona Cardinals.

The Denver Broncos have narrowed their coaching search to Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio and Pittsburgh Steelers offensive line coach Mike Munchak, sources told ESPN. "Everybody just wishes him well".

"I pay attention to the schemes that these guys run". Though his specialty is defense, talking to him reveals a coach who understands all facets of the game. "And most of that's all coordinated, so we know what they're running but, like I said, Vic Fangio, we practiced against them this year and they run a 3-4 perfectly", Harris said. However, Bowles has not signed a contract yet and was not officially announced to the job in Tampa, meaning he still could accept the role in Chicago. "What he does defensively, but on top of that, too, I think he's such a great human being".

Despite the experience and accolades, Fangio had hardly been considered as a head coach prior to January. And the two who did not - Josh McDaniels and Vance Joseph - were fired in two or fewer seasons, combining for three years of at least 10 losses of the four on the job.

The Broncos have had four starting quarterbacks over that span, including free agent Case Keenum, who was underwhelming in his first year in Denver in 2018.

Much as former Denver defensive coordinator Wade Phillips used to draw praise from players less than half his age, Fangio was greatly respected in the Bears' locker room. He did a strong job of putting together a staff past year, but Fangio and the defense was already in place.
