Councils forced to hold citizenship ceremonies on Aust Day

Councils forced to hold citizenship ceremonies on Aust Day

Rather than change the date, he's chose to double down on January 26 by making it compulsory for local councils to hold citizenship ceremonies on that day.

The government will also ban "board shorts" and "thongs" from those events.

Under the existing citizenship code, councils may choose to hold citizenship ceremonies, provided they comply with a set of guidelines outlined by the government.

Australia Day marks the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the first British fleet to Sydney Cove where the British flag was raised on the continent marking the start of colonisation.

In an interview with TODAY, Mr Morrison said he is stepping in to direct councils because he doesn't want to see Australia Day undermined in the future and "see it fade away".

Amid a resurgence in economic and diplomatic engagement between Fiji and Australia, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison will travel to Fiji this week for the first-ever official bilateral visit by an Australian Prime Minister to Fiji.

In fact, the only time ScoMo acknowledged Indigenous people at all in this whole weird kerfuffle was when he suggested that we can just celebrate Indigenous Australia on January 25, before getting back to our regularly scheduled Australia Day on January 26.

Australia's Prime Minister Scott Morrison said that the federal government will force local councils to conduct citizenship ceremonies on Australia Day, after several moved their functions off the national holiday, given its links to colonisation and the ill-treatment of indigenous Aborigines.

Councils will have the opportunity to provide feedback on the proposed code changes.

Opposition leader Bill Shorten said that the Government was only pursuing this to "keep their base happy". Well, you don't have to run citizenship ceremonies. "I think it has broad support".

The only other option for holding the ceremonies will be on September 17 - Australian Citizenship Day.

"It's a couple of weeks before Australia day in January, it's a bit of slow news".

The special minister of state said he would advocate against changing the date if the perennial debate was put to a public test, but would respect the will of Australians if they wanted to celebrate on a different day.

But there is little political appetite for shifting Australia Day, with both major political parties committed to the status quo.
