DNA sought of males at center where comatose woman had baby

DNA sought of males at center where comatose woman had baby

A woman in a vegetative state who had a baby after she was sexually assaulted at a long-term care facility is recovering in hospital with her child, police have said.

In a news conference on Wednesday, Phoenix police spokesman Sgt Tommy Thompson said it was not known whether anyone had declined to give a DNA sample.

It is feared the 29-year-old was raped and impregnanted as she lay in a vegetative state - as she has done for over a decade.

The search warrant to obtain DNA samples from the Hacienda HealthCare-owned facility was served on Tuesday, according to company spokesman David Leibowitz, the Associated Pressreported.

A lawyer for the woman's family said the infant "has been born into a loving family and will be well cared for", according to the New York Times. "We will continue to cooperate with Phoenix police and all other investigative agencies to uncover the facts in this deeply disturbing" situation.

A week after the victim gave birth, Phoenix police have still released next to nothing about the investigation.

She has been in the care of Hacienda HealthCare, a Phoenix-based nursing facility.

Medical experts have said it is possible the 29-year-old woman displayed no outward signs which workers who cared for her every day would have noticed. Thompson said off-duty officers have been providing extra security "to protect anybody who's there".

That same year, a woman in a coma at a home in MA gave birth to a baby girl prematurely and with severe brain damage.

Michealels also revealed the patient's relatives are "outraged, traumatized and in shock by the abuse and neglect of their daughter at Hacienda Healthcare", adding, "The family is well aware of the intense news and public interest in their daughter's case, but at this time is not emotionally ready to make a public statement".

Founded as Hacienda de Los Angeles in 1967, Hacienda HealthCare describes itself on its website as "the leading provider of specialized medical care and social services for Arizona's infants, children and young adults who are medically fragile or chronically ill, including those with developmental disabilities".

The five minutes of audio from the December 29 birth starts with a frantic nurse at the Phoenix facility yelling, "The baby's turning blue! It is my hope that justice will be served", Rambler said.

"One of our patients just had a baby, and we had no idea she was pregnant", the nurse said.

Earlier this week, the chief executive of the corporation in charge of the home resigned over the case. They include increased staff presence during any patient interaction, more monitoring of patient care areas and additional security measures involving visitors.

PEOPLE reports they date back to 2009 from an order that transferred guardianship of the woman from her biological father to her mother.

According to the Phoenix CBS Affiliate KPHO, an unidentified source said, "From what I've been told, she was moaning ... and they didn't know what was wrong with her. ..."
