Donald Trump makes case for border wall to tackle 'humanitarian crisis'

The situation along the United States border with Mexico is a "growing crisis", President Donald Trump said on Tuesday (Jan 8), stressing that uncontrolled illegal immigration is hurting millions of Americans.

Trump will tell the American people that there is "a humanitarian and security crisis" at the border, Pence said in television interviews on Tuesday morning.

Trump's prime-time address, scheduled for 9 p.m. ET, will be the Republican president's latest attempt to persuade Democrats to back his barrier on the southern border. I've also embedded the video below. But Trump rejects that legislation because it doesn't have funding for his border wall. "Do they want to run the promise of more lies, more misleading statistics, more twisting of reality, mindless confrontation, all for the sake of defending Trump's dark twisted fantasy and a wall on the Mexican border?" The vice president stressed that there is indeed a crisis, adding that it must be taken care of before the administration can move onto negotiating other parts of the USA national security funding.

Democrats have repeatedly slammed the proposed wall but have remained vague about counter-proposals that would curb illegal immigration.

"Now that the television networks have chose to air the President's address, which if his past statements are any indication will be full of malice and misinformation, Democrats must immediately be given equal airtime", their statement read.

But in his first TV address to the nation from the Oval Office, Mr Trump did not declare a national emergency to bypass Congress and build the barrier.

"Someone is drastically misinforming him", Democratic U.S. Sen.

The impasse between the Democrat-controlled House of Representatives and the Republican president has forced Trump's hand to consider alternative funding, something a national emergency would provide through a military construction budget.

"We don't think that's the American way", Hoyer told reporters on Tuesday.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said Democrats and Republicans agree on the need to secure borders.

A National Park Service ranger looks out onto the city from Trump International Hotel's historic clock tower, which remains open and staffed by the National Park Service despite the partial government shutdown.

Experts say if the shutdown persists, Canadians entering the USA will see an escalating impact at the northern border, where Customs and Border Protection officials are working without pay because their jobs are considered an essential service.

"This barrier is absolutely critical to border security".

Efforts to execute this via Congress have been blocked by lawmakers, causing a partial government shutdown as the wall funding was part of wider legislation that secured money for the running of government, including employee salaries.

With his use of a formal White House speech instead of his favoured Twitter blasts, Trump is embracing the ceremonial trappings of his office as he tries to exit a political quagmire of his own making. Two Guatemalan children have died in border custody, while images of border patrol officers firing tear gas at migrants have raised the ire of critics.
